A different kind of presence

Put yourself
in the action.

Built around controllers, with familiar AC menus adapted for use in the world around you.

01 / PHYSICAL COMBAT

Make every swing yours.

Swing melee weapons, draw a bow, and aim magic with your casting hand. Aiming previews help you line up the next shot.

02 / WITHIN REACH

Keep the essentials close.

Use your wrist spellbar and quick spell wheel, inspect items with a button, and adjust pinned vitals and menu scale.

03 / PLAY TOGETHER

Bring friends into Dereth.

VR-enabled ACE servers support tracked player motion and VR combat alongside desktop and retail players.

Full VR combat and motion features need the updated VR-enabled ACE server. They are not supplied by an unmodified ACE or GDLE server.

For native Quest installation

  • Quest 3 with tracked controllers. Quest 3S is accepted by the installer, but not hardware-verified.
  • A Windows PC, reliable USB data cable, and Meta Developer Mode.
  • Android platform-tools for Windows and your retail DAT files.
  • Several GB of free headset storage and Wi-Fi access to your game server.

For PC VR

  • A Windows 10/11 64-bit gaming PC and a SteamVR-compatible headset.
  • SteamVR selected as the current OpenXR runtime.
  • Meta PC software for Rift; Link or Air Link for Quest used as a PC headset.
  • Your retail DAT files on the PC. Native Quest sideloading is not needed.

The world of Dereth

Bring your
game files.

The client reads the original game’s models, textures, sounds, and world from retail DAT files.

Already have an updated retail install? You can use those same files.

Get the retail files

Open the ACEmulator retail setup guide. Use its retail installer download or a listed preservation mirror, install Asheron’s Call, then apply the guide’s End of Retail Client Files update. Extract the update into your retail game folder and replace the older files.

You only need the game-data steps for AC:Unreal and AC:VR. ThwargLauncher and Decal are not required by these clients.

Save a complete copy in one folder

Keep the files together in a permanent folder. The usual retail location is:

C:\Turbine\Asheron's Call

A separate folder such as D:\Games\AC-Data works too. Copy the files out of the downloaded ZIP; don’t leave your only copy in a temporary download folder.

Your DAT folder

  • client_portal.dat Required
  • client_cell_1.dat Required
  • client_local_English.dat Required
  • client_highres.dat Recommended · optional

Keep client_highres.dat with the others when available for the higher-resolution retail textures. Keep a backup of this complete, updated folder.

Point the installer or client at your files

The Quest installer asks for this folder on your PC and copies the files to the headset. Leave the app’s managed DAT location in place after installation.

Retail DAT files are not included in either download. Updating the AC client does not replace your separate game-data backup.

Native Quest setup

Install once.
Then untether.

You’ll use a Windows PC for this process. After installation, the headset runs the game on its own.

Using Rift or Link to play on a PC? Skip to PC VR setup.

Prepare the installer folder

Download and extract all files from AC-VR-Quest-v52-installer-r6.zip. Open START-HERE.html for the included quick-start guide.

Download Android SDK Platform-Tools for Windows from Google, accept its download terms, and extract it. Put the entire platform-tools folder beside Install-Quest.cmd so platform-tools\adb.exe is present. Android Studio is not required.

Connect and authorize your headset

Connect a USB data cable directly to your PC. Put the headset on, keep it awake, and accept Allow USB debugging with the computer fingerprint. Select Always allow from this computer.

Accepting Quest Link or file access is not the USB debugging permission. A charge-only cable will not work.

Install the app and transfer your data

Double-click Install-Quest.cmd on the PC. When asked, provide the folder containing your retail DAT files. The installer installs the APK, copies the data, and verifies the files. The high-resolution DAT is included when present.

Keep the cable connected and the headset awake until it reports successful completion. If it stops, read the error and retry; already verified data does not need to be transferred again.

Installing only the APK through another sideloading tool is not enough: the game needs its DAT files on the headset too.

Launch AC:VR and join your server

Open Apps → Unknown Sources → AC:VR on the headset. The installer may launch it for you. You can disconnect the USB cable after installation; stay connected to Wi-Fi.

Open Browse servers in the login screen and add the server you want, or add a custom server using its owner’s address, port, and ACE/GDLE type. Imported servers use the port in the directory.

Add your username and password under Accounts, select the server and account, then press Launch. Choose your character and press Play. Saved accounts can be used across your server list.

Account registration depends on the server. Use its website or Discord link in the browser for account requirements and help. Choose a unique game password.

Use a VR-enabled ACE server for tracked combat and player poses. The native headset must be able to reach that server over its own network connection.

Set up comfort and keep your install

Use the left controller’s Menu button to open VR settings. Check handedness, seated/standing calibration, turning, movement direction, and UI size before heading into combat.

For future releases, extract the new bundle and run Update-Quest.cmd. To repair missing data, run Repair-Quest.cmd. Do not uninstall first; updating keeps your game data, accounts, and preferences.

PC VR setup

Powered by
your PC.

For Rift, or a Quest connected through Meta Link / Air Link. The game and DAT files live on Windows.

Install the Windows package

Run the AC:Unreal / AC:VR Windows setup, including the Microsoft runtime installers if needed. Prepare your DAT folder on the PC. Choose the optional AC VR (SteamVR) desktop shortcut, or use the Start menu shortcut.

Connect the headset before launching

Start the Meta PC software and connect your headset. On Quest, enter its Link / Air Link PC connection first. Start SteamVR and wait for the headset and both controllers to appear connected.

In SteamVR’s Settings → OpenXR, set SteamVR as the current OpenXR runtime. The supplied PC VR launcher checks this setting.

Launch in VR

Open AC VR (SteamVR) from Start or the desktop. For the portable package, run AC-VR.bat. Keep the headset connected before you launch; starting AC:Unreal in desktop mode does not turn it into a VR session.

Set the PC’s DAT folder, choose your server and account, then Launch and Play. The desktop guide covers the shared login screen.

A little assistance

Keep the

Does native Quest need a gaming PC or SteamVR?

No. A Windows PC is needed to install and update the native build, but AC:VR runs on the headset after that. SteamVR and Meta Link are used only for the separate PC VR route.

The installer says offline or unauthorized.

Keep the headset awake and check for the USB debugging fingerprint prompt. Try unplugging and reconnecting the cable, then a different USB data cable and a direct PC USB port. If no device appears, check Developer Mode and the Meta ADB driver. Quest Link permission alone is not sufficient.

Where is the app after installation?

Look for AC:VR under Apps → Unknown Sources on the headset. It is sideloaded, not installed from the Horizon Store. Check that the installer completed successfully before opening it.

I see portal space but never reach the world.

Confirm the installer finished verifying all required DAT files. Close the game and run Repair-Quest.cmd with the complete DAT folder. Also verify the server is reachable over the headset’s Wi-Fi and that the server’s world connection port is available.

My PC VR game opens as a flat window.

Connect the headset first, enter Link / Air Link if using Quest, then start SteamVR and select it as the current OpenXR runtime. Use AC VR (SteamVR) or AC-VR.bat rather than the desktop launcher. Close an existing game instance before retrying.

Which servers support the VR features?

Physical combat, hand-aimed trajectories, and networked head/hand poses require this project’s VR-enabled ACE server. Standard ACE/GDLE login support does not add these extensions to a server. Ask the owner before joining for full VR gameplay; in-world GDLE parity is still being tested.

Do I need to copy my DAT files every update?

No. Use Update-Quest.cmd from the new release. It updates the app while preserving verified game data and settings. Keep a PC backup of your updated retail DAT folder, and do not uninstall the app as an update step.

Is 90 FPS guaranteed?

Not yet. This is a community preview and dense areas can run below the target. Use the graphics and comfort settings to find a comfortable setup. The release notes distinguish automated checks from live headset playtesting.

What should I include in a bug report?

Include the build version, native Quest or PC VR, server type, location, and steps to reproduce. For install failures, the installer writes Quest-Install.txt, Quest-Data.txt, or Quest-Connection.txt beside the scripts. Review logs before sharing and never send passwords.
